Doing What Works: Be Yourself and Get Results

In the world of getting things done, remember wise sayings like:

  • “Don’t worry about what others think of you.”
  • “Do what’s right for you.”

Think about how often you go along with what others want you to do. How often do we conform? How often do we go along to get along?

To achieve big things, you likely have to do things differently. Remember, making progress can make things a little messy. Are you willing to do things differently, even if it is not what others are doing?

You might be thinking about posting bold stuff on social media. You might need to do new things like making phone calls to people you don’t know. These things might not be what everyone else is doing, but they can help you succeed.

Think about Rick Barry, who played basketball in the NBA. He used a special way of shooting the ball called “granny shots” – which is an under hand shot. The “granny shot” was different from what most players did. But it moved his shooting percentage by 10 points. Wilt Chamberlain, on the other hand, abandoned the technique due to image concerns.

People may not like Rick Barry using the “granny shot.” Yet he did it, and he got excellent at it. He showed that it’s more important to get good results than to worry about what people think.

So, remember, do what works for you!

Here are some things to remember:

  1. Reputation is important, but so is being yourself and doing what works for you.
  2. Don’t be afraid to do things your own way, even if it’s not what everyone else is doing.
  3. Sometimes, to achieve really big things, you have to do things that might seem a little different.
  4. Getting good results is more important than what people think of you.
